Best AI Visibility Checkers 2026: Ahrefs, Arobis, Peec AI & More Compared
An AI visibility checker measures how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and other AI answer systems mention or cite your brand. Useful checkers also show which competitors appear instead, which sources are cited and whether the gap is content, authority or technical readiness. DIY AI does not run a live checker – we independently evaluate them using the public methodology behind our Dataset Hub and AI SEO tools dataset.
Quick verdict: Ahrefs is the strongest free starting point for a broad cross-platform snapshot. Arobis is better for technical-readiness diagnosis. Honeyb offers a low-cost route into monitoring, Birdeye suits multi-location brands, Peec AI fits structured team reporting, and Otterly.AI suits smaller teams.

What an AI visibility checker actually measures
Before comparing scores, check the measurement model underneath them. Three approaches dominate:
- Brand mention tracking: the tool runs a defined set of prompts and records whether the model mentions, recommends or cites your brand.
- Technical readiness: the checker looks for signals that can affect whether AI systems can retrieve, understand and associate your site with the right entity. Arobis leans much further in this direction than most tools in the table.
- Competitor benchmarking: the platform compares your mention rate, share of voice, citations or position against a fixed competitor set. It shows whether the whole category moved or only your brand did.
A checker cannot tell you every answer every real user sees. Outputs change with prompt wording, location, model version, account context and repeated runs. Practitioners repeatedly report the same problem: the dashboard improves, then a manual check shows different brands. Treat the result as sampled trend data. Lock the prompt set, market, language and engine, then judge movement across repeated checks rather than one screenshot.
Google states in its guidance for generative AI features that its AI experiences still rely on core Search systems, crawlable content and established SEO fundamentals. A third-party readiness score can expose useful problems, but it is not an internal ranking metric.
Free vs paid AI visibility checkers: what changes after the first scan
Free AI visibility checkers answer one question well: do we appear at all, and where are the obvious gaps? Ahrefs, Arobis, Honeyb and Birdeye all provide a low-friction baseline, although they measure it differently.
Pay when the job changes from diagnosis to management. Recurring checks, history, competitors, source-level citations and reporting are the real upgrade. Prompt allowance matters more than headline price: 15 prompts may cover one product in one market, but it shrinks quickly once you split by use case, persona and country.
The hidden cost is analyst time. Hundreds of prompts with weak grouping and filtering can create more reporting work than a smaller, cleaner setup. For ongoing platforms rather than one-off checkers, see our AI visibility monitoring for teams.
LLM visibility tool vs AI visibility checker: are they the same thing?
Vendors use the terms loosely. An AI visibility checker is usually a snapshot: enter a brand or domain and get a score or report. An LLM visibility tool is the ongoing layer: saved prompts, repeated checks, history, citations, competitors and reporting.
Choose a checker while validating the channel. Move to an LLM visibility tool once somebody owns a recurring review process. Buying monitoring before agreeing on a stable prompt set only automates an unsettled measurement model.
How to choose an AI visibility checker for your team
| If you need… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A fast free benchmark across major AI surfaces | Ahrefs | Broad free coverage with a large search-backed paid index. |
| A technical diagnosis before paying for monitoring | Arobis | Focuses on entity, structured-data and content-readiness problems. |
| Low-cost multi-engine monitoring | Honeyb or Otterly.AI | Both provide an accessible path into recurring tracking. |
| Local or multi-location visibility | Birdeye | Search AI is organised around locations, business data and local brand accuracy. |
| Agency or in-house reporting across topics and competitors | Peec AI | Daily tracking, competitors and source reporting fit repeatable team workflows. |
If you already pay for a broader SEO platform, compare the incremental cost before adding another specialist dashboard. See our SEO tool alternatives comparison if AI visibility is only one requirement alongside keywords, audits, backlinks and reporting.
DIY AI’s buying rule: don’t compare visibility percentages across vendors unless the prompt set, engines, location, language, and cadence are comparable. Compare each tool against its own previous baseline instead. That avoids treating a probabilistic answer system like a traditional rank tracker.
